The UK Government wants to simplify financing for artificial intelligence projects in order to speed up its Plan For Change.
Four new approaches to funding innovation will begin trials from next month. This will involve the development of new outcome metrics, and evaluation plans driving major digital infrastructure projects.
The focus is on delivering maximum value for money to taxpayers, with the administration currently dealing with significant economic pressures. A recent review estimated that Britons are missing out on £45billion per year due to ‘archaic tech’ which urgently needs to be upgraded, freeing up valuable staffing hours and capacity.
However, the call to bring public services into the future has come at a time when the UK is waking up to a new era of European insecurity, triggering widespread demands to boost spending on defence beyond the modernisation of a submarine-based nuclear deterrent which is currently expected to cost almost £37billion – an increase of £5billion compared to estimates in 2021.
‘Technology has immense potential to build public services that work for citizens. But a decades old process has encouraged short-sighted thinking and outdated tech, while stopping crucial innovation before it even gets going,’ said Technology Secretary Peter Kyle.
‘These changes we’re making ensure innovation is the default. We will help give AI innovators in Government the freedom they need to chase an exciting idea and build prototypes almost immediately,’ he continued. ‘This review will help us build technology that will mean businesses can skip the admin and get on with driving growth, digital systems supporting the police are more reliable so they can keep our streets safe, and it will mean we can build new tools to speed up wait times for doctors’ appointments and get the NHS back on its feet are built.’
