The local authority’s EV Cable Channel [EVCC] Pilot Scheme aims to ‘better understand’ the range of on-street solutions available.
Supplied by Kerbo Charge, a new cable channel system has been installed as part of the programme. Home owner James Turver was the first recipient of the technology, at his house in the Retford area of the city.
According to Nottinghamshire County Council, the application met the required criteria to take part in the scheme. This includes no off-street parking, ownership or the lease of an electric vehicle, and a charger which has either been installed or is awaiting installation.
‘The channel is great; it does exactly what it’s meant to do without any issues. It’s a straightforward yet brilliant solution to a challenge that will only become more common as more people transition to electric vehicles in the coming years,’ said Turver. ‘It’s rare to find something so simple that works so well—I honestly can’t fault it at all.’
Installation of the channel involves cutting a small groove into the footpath outside a home, allowing an EV charging cable to be extended from a charge point on the exterior of a house. This means there is no need to disrupt the public pavement by laying additional cable.
‘One of the primary motivations for switching to an electric vehicle is to reduce your carbon footprint,’ added Cllr Neil Clarke, MBE Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council. ‘We hope that the cable channel will make it easier for more of our residents to drive an electric vehicle. Plus, it will enable the council to determine if it can manage an adequate on-street charging infrastructure for people without driveways.’
