Cyber security operations centre at University of Sussex

Real-time detection of and response to cyber threats through fully managed SOC provided by Exponential-e

The University of Sussex is a leading higher education and research institution, with more than 18,500 students and some 3,500 staff based in the campus near Brighton. With much of the work being done involving digital and online systems, the university has implemented a long-term cyber security programme.

Now, as part of that programme, the university has partnered with Exponential-e to implement a fully managed cyber security operations centre (SOC).This will operate as a hybrid model, with the Exponential-e team working in close collaboration with the university’s internal IT services.

Between them, they aim to strengthen cyber security capabilities and provide monitoring, threat detection and response 24/7, 365 days a year. Among the key benefits to be delivered by the managed SOC service is the increased capacity for earlier detection and response to events, incidents and threats to minimise disruption to IT services. That will mean a reduction in the number and severity of cyber incidents.

The contract with Exponential-e comprises implementation and then an initial, three-year period, with options for two further one-year extensions.

Suzanne Elmore, Cyber Security Manager at the University of Sussex, says: ‘In an ever-changing threat landscape, there is a continual need for improved insight and awareness of emerging cyber threats within the University. Working with Exponential-e to deliver the managed SOC, we will be able to access an informed source of intelligence to efficiently monitor threat analysis and respond to cyber threats, 24/7.’

The managed SOC service will not only monitor and manage threat analysis for quicker response rates to minimise IT

disruption for students and staff, but it will also help to reduce the University’s exposure to financial and reputational risk from cyber security threats.’
