Blackpool Transport Services nominated for routeone tech award

The company has been lauded for innovative approaches to integrating technology within its operations.

Blackpool Transport Services has been nominated for the Best Use of Technology – Bus category, with National express, Somerset Passenger Solutions and Buses.gg also up for the same prize. This year alone, the North West seaside town’s transit network has seen a number of upgrades, both behind the scenes and in customer-facing areas.

In March, Blackpool’s public transport provider introduced a new paperless system for engineering checks. This enables professionals to check on the status of the full fleet of 103 buses and 18 trams via any connected device. Over time, this will replace 11,000 pieces of paper and 62 hours of staff time each month.

Earlier this year, an overhaul of services saw new direct links created across the town and its immediate surrounds, with new routes introduced based on data-driven assessment of provision. The new network uses almost as many vehicles as before, but these have been redistributed for greater efficiency and improved area coverage, which is also projected to deliver around £160,000 in cost savings.

‘The routeone Awards stand as a beacon of recognition in the coach and bus industry. Each year, the calibre of entries surpasses expectations, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry. The finalists announced today represent the very best, and it is an honour to recognise their achievements,’ said Helen Conway, Event Director at the routeone Awards.

Now in their 18th year, the routeone Awards recognises leading organisations in UK coach and bus transport. For 2024, 81 finalists have been chosen across 15 categories, with winners set to be announced at Vox, Resorts World, Birmingham, on 13th November. Judges include David Cattermole, former Managing Director of Galloway Travel, Joan Aitken OBE, former Traffic Commissioner for Scotland, Nigel Eggleton, former Managing Director with First Bus South Yorkshire and Midlands, and Mark Fowles OBE, former Managing Director of Nottingham City Transport.
