Bassetlaw District Council goes electric

Council replaces six diesel-powered vehicles with new Renault Kangoo E-Tech vans, which will be charged from a solar-powered station.

Bassetlaw District Council is committed not only to a target of net zero but wants to be one of the cleanest and greenest parts of the country. Upgrading its fleet to electric vehicles (EVs) is just the latest of a series of initiatives.

Last year, the council launched two electric street sweepers for use in Worksop town centre. It now plans to replace its whole diesel fleet with electric vehicles (EVs) over coming years, including refuse vehicles.

An air source heating system has been installed at the council’s offices at Queens Buildings, a major carbon reduction project has been completed at Kilton Forest Gold Course and the council’s Carlton Forest depot has been equipped with a solar PV system equivalent to 146 solar panels.

The depot was also fitted with a charge station – and it’s here that the new electric vans will be charged.

Renault Kangoo E-Tech vans are fitted with lithium-ion batteries that have 100% useable capacity of 44kWh and a range of 186 miles on full charge. They’ll be used by many different teams across the council, including environmental health, facilities, parks and open spaces and the anti-social behaviour team.

Cllr Darrel Pulk, Cabinet Member for Environment and Energy at Bassetlaw District Council, says: ‘The purchase of these new vans bears testament to Bassetlaw’s commitment to helping to protect the environment by reducing our carbon footprint.

‘I am delighted we have been able to replace some of our fleet with these six new vehicles and have received positive feedback from staff who are thrilled to use these new vans.

‘As part of our Bassetlaw Vision 2040 we are aiming to be the cleanest, greenest district in the country and the purchase of these vehicles alongside our other carbon reducing efforts will help us to achieve this goal.’
