Begin a data science career while studying for a valuable qualification

Our Data Team is a small group of specialists with a can-do attitude and a collaborative approach. They are playing a vital part in our mission to become a data-centric council. As Data Science Apprentice, you will be a key member of the team. 

The Role:

This apprenticeship is a great opportunity to start a career in data science. The 36-month programme has been carefully designed to help you grow into a role as a Data Scientist. With responsibility for supporting data functions across the Council, you will develop a range of valuable skills and experience. You will spend 20% of your working hours working towards a Data Science degree qualification, which will involve training and producing evidence of your development. 

You will find a lot of freedom in the pathways data science can offer. The apprenticeship offers you plenty of flexibility to shape this role into something more specialist as your data science knowledge and skills develop. At the Council, you can take advantage of opportunities for independent learning and research, as well as get involved in new initiatives.

Along the way, you will have a real impact on the Council, helping us to save money and make improvements to our services. You will have the chance to work on award-winning projects and enjoy the opportunity to work with various organisations who partner with us. You will also be able to start building your future network of professional contacts, as well as expanding your knowledge, by joining Data Science groups across the public sector. When you complete your apprenticeship, we will support you to find a suitable role as the next step in your career.

About You:

Whether you are just starting out or are looking for a career change, we’re keen to learn from your skills and experience. If you’ve not worked in Local Government before you might be surprised by the variety of projects and the pace of change. We respond rapidly to current events and changing priorities so you will need to demonstrate resilience, with the ability to be flexible and adapt to change. We expect you to have either A Levels including a science, technology, engineering or Maths subject, or a Level 3 Apprenticeship, or another relevant qualification. You will need to have achieved a pass in English and Maths at Level 1 or above, A level or equivalent, and pass Level 2 by the end of your apprenticeship. 

Naturally, we expect you to be interested in data and keen to explore the possibilities of data science and analytics in a local government environment. Your curiosity and initiative will be valuable in identifying new data science opportunities that will make a real difference to the lives of our residents.  Ideally you will have basic knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R or SQL. Familiarity with statistical concepts and techniques, and some knowledge of data protection, data security and data ethics will also be an advantage. You should have great communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
