St Helens digital upgrade begins

The project aims to ‘revolutionise’ connectivity in the Merseyside town.

Funded by the Town Deal project, and delivered through full fibre business internet and network specialist Elevate, the final phase of a major upgrade to digital infrastructure in St Helens has begun.

Fibre cables and access points are now being installed across the town centre, which is undergoing a wider redevelopment, with the aim of providing significantly faster and more reliable internet speeds. According to the council, this will help boost the economy by allowing companies in the area to function more efficiently.

The scheme has incorporated the use of recycled materials where possible, with a local workforce involved alongside professionals from the national contractor. Social impact has also been considered, with free 1 Gbps internet installed at the St Helens Coalition of Disabled People (Buzz Hub) at Nuttall House. This will be available for as long as the organisation need it. Around £40,000 has also been given to local educational causes, including SEND services.

‘We’re delighted to see local people like Josh taking up opportunities on such a transformative project,’ said Councillor Keith Laird, St Helens Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for People, Performance and IT. ‘This investment in digital infrastructure will completely change the way St Helens town centre works – supporting our ambition to become the best-connected area in the Liverpool City Region. Strong connectivity underpins everything from business growth to innovation, and this project is a huge step forward for our borough.’
