G7 back public sector AI and quantum computing leap

The world’s most powerful leaders have pledged to speed up the rollout of automation and revolutionary new forms of computing.

Issuing a joint statement, member states said they would work collaborstively to promote wider use of artificial intelligence within the public sector in a bid to boost cost effectiveness.

‘[We will]  accelerate adoption of AI in the public sector to enhance the quality of public services for both citizens and businesses and increase government efficiency.’

Canada, which hosted the meeting in Kananaskis, currently holds the G7 presidency and has pledged to use this to push a series of ‘rapid solution labs’ aimed at overcoming barriers to AI adoption within government organisations.

A ‘road map’ will also be drawn up by all countries in the group to try and set out necessary procedures for successful projects in this area, alongside a catalogue of “open source and shareable AI solutions for members.” Energy security, resilience and affordability will be prioritised.

‘We plan to create the conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including micro-enterprises — the engine of our economies — to access, understand, and adopt AI in ways that drive value and productivity,’ a related document stated.

Members have also suggested increased focus on quantum computing — which many believe could be more transformative than artificial intelligence, particulate within cyber, national and international security. A ‘common vision’ for how this nascent field will progress has been outlined.

‘[Quantium technologies] have the potential to bring significant and transformative benefits to societies worldwide’ and are ‘poised to create economic and social benefits in sectors such as finance, communication, transport, energy, health and agriculture.’
