Cumberland Council hunts for innovation chief to lead on ‘major change’

The authority is offering a six-figure salary to the successful candidate, who will deliver improved services and boost revenue. 

Created in 2023 as a replacement for multiple individual boroughs, Cumberland Council has advertised the new role with an annual paycheck between £113,434 and £127,225.

According to the role description, the individual needs to take the helm of ‘key functions including ICT, digital, and corporate assets’. This will involve working across departments, fostering a culture of innovation in a similar approach to Downing Street’s call for a ‘start up’ approach in all ranks of government. 

The Cumberland Council position will also require the innovation leader to: ‘champion innovation and entrepreneurial thinking across the council, drive revenue growth while maintaining exceptional public service quality, [and] support assistant directors in the development of key strategies related to ICT, digital transformation, and corporate asset management’. 

In other news from the region, a new Innovation Centre in Workington passed a key milestone earlier this month, with the steel equivalent to a ‘topping out ceremony’ marking completion of the building frame. Once operational, the facility will offer purpose built accommodation for entrepreneurial companies and high quality modern offices in the Cumbrian town.

Due to open in Spring 2026, the structure itself comprises 95% recycled steel, delivering a carbon equivalent saving of 159 tonnes – equivalent to heating 424 homes annually. The project forms part of a wider £23.1million Workington Town Deal, funded by central government. A sports village and improvements to the port area are also included in the package.
