440 dual chargers for Plymouth by 2028

City council partners with Believ to expand on-street charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, with scope to scale up.

Charge point operator (CPO) Believ is working with Plymouth City Council to deliver some 440 dual chargers for electric vehicles by 2028. The project will significantly expand the council’s on-street charging infrastructure, with the potential to further scale up to meet increased demand.

Installation work will begin this summer, with new charge points to be installed at on-street locations across the city. Priority will be given to areas where residents do not have access to private driveways or off-street parking.

Fast chargers, suitable for longer stays and overnight use, will be installed alongside dedicated EV parking bays. Believ will install, operate and maintain the network.

The initiative is part of Plymouth’s wider strategy to reduce carbon emissions, improve local air quality and support residents in making the switch to electric. The project is supported by the local electric vehicle infrastructure (LEVI) funding, Believ fully funding any remaining costs – ensuring delivery at no cost to local taxpayers.

Believ also recently shared new research on the changes of air quality in local authorities across the UK, with every local authority except the City of London successfully reducing levels of PM2.5 to meet UK guidelines. Cllr John Stephens, Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport at Plymouth City Council, says: ‘This is a major milestone for Plymouth, and we are already seeing how our EV strategy is benefitting residents who have an electric car. We are taking a significant step towards delivering a reliable, accessible charging network for residents who do not have off-street parking. This investment will help remove a key barrier to electric vehicle ownership.’

Guy Bartlett, CEO of Believ, adds: ‘We are proud to partner with Plymouth City Council on this significant rollout. At Believ, we are committed to delivering high-quality, reliable EV charging infrastructure at the heart of communities. By working closely with local authorities, we aim to make charging more convenient and accessible for residents across the city.’
