Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has partnered with specialists Vix Technology, which is supplying and managing what are technically called Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) displays.
Last month, a pilot scheme using the new RTPI displays was launched at North Manchester General Hospital. Now the displays are being rolled out to 320 sites over the course of this year.
To make the displays more accessible, some feature text-to-speech (TTS) functionality. They have been designed to work in a range of challenging environments, and include features such as durable outdoor screens, large indoor units and energy efficient battery-powered signs. Vix will securely monitor and manage them.
TfGM says that this upgrade will make it easier for everyone to plan and adapt journeys across the Bee Network, and that the initiative is a significant step in its overall efforts to provide a fully integrated, accessible transport system through the Improving Journeys programme.
Matthew Wilks, Business Development Director at Vix, says: ‘Accessible real-time information is essential to an inclusive network. By embracing text-to-speech within the Bee Network, TfGM is helping remove barriers, enabling more people to travel independently and with confidence.’
Graham Banks, Travel Information Manager at TfGM, adds: ‘Delivering a world-class, integrated transport system for Greater Manchester means making travel easier, more reliable, and accessible for everyone. We’re delighted to be rolling out real-time information displays at key locations in every part of Greater Manchester and at four interchanges.
‘By providing live, clear updates we will help passengers to make informed choices and enjoy a smoother journey. I am delighted that we have partnered with Vix to deliver this next important step forward for our customers.’
