County council initiative spotlights top 50 technology businesses in the region for second year running in bid to boost local economy
Essex County Council’s Ambitious Essex initiative has listed the top 50 tech firms in the region. Across the whole of Essex, there are some 5,720 telecom and digital businesses – according to figures from 2023 – which employ some 20,000 people and generate more than £1.274bn in gross value added (GVA).
Last year, the Ambitious Essex team listed the region’s top 50 tech firms. Now it’s refreshed that list to reflect the fast-changing sector.
The revised list covers everything from IT services to gaming, agriculture to fintech. It ranges from web development agency &Element to low energy, high performance computer company Zanshuri.
Many of these companies provide bespoke, tailored services. For example, Salt is mobile data app specifically for Christians, while Antobot and Versatile RobotX develop robots for use in agriculture.
But other companies in the list offer wide-ranging applications. Last month – as our sister site Social Care Today reported – the government announced that a new AI tool developed by Colchester-based healthcare provider Cera is being rolled out across the NHS. Cera, of course, made the Essex top 50.
The Ambitious Essex site lists all 50 companies and provides full details of their pioneering work. You can also search for companies by sector and Essex district.
Selection criteria included such factors as turnover, funding and investment secured, approach to skills and employment, local and global reach, growth potential and innovations. Beauhurst’s extensive data platform also aided the selection process, helping the team to find businesses they otherwise weren’t aware of.
Cllr Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Economic Growth and Prosperity at Essex County Council, says: ‘The tech sector in Essex is absolutely thriving and the county is right at the heart of the tech revolution happening across the UK right now. The businesses on the Ambitious Essex Tech 50 are at the forefront of innovation in the industry and leading ground-breaking developments which are changing the tech, research and manufacturing industries in Essex and across the country.
‘We’re passionate about supporting innovative businesses and industries and it is encouraging to see so many inspirational tech businesses in the county embrace new ways of working and join the tech revolution.’
