Three-storey model house for trialling new tech

Developer Persimmon Homes creates a special home for testing new technologies and training its staff

A distinctive-looking, three-storey house has been developed by leading 5-star house-builder Persimmon Homes – but not for people to live in. The house has been specially designed for testing new construction technology as well as for the training and development of staff, subcontractors, suppliers and manufacturers.

Founded in 1972, Persimmon Homes currently employs more than 5,000 staff directly while also supporting some 86,000 jobs in the wider construction industry. The company is based in York but operates 29 regional offices throughout the UK – including the brand names Charles Church and Westbury Partnerships. That means a lot of people across the country can use and learn from the new model house.

The house, built at the company’s Space4 factory in Castle Bromwich, has been developed in line with the latest building regulations and modern methods of construction. For example, Mauer brick façades were factory fitted to the Space4 timber frame, improving efficiency and significantly reducing build time.

Indeed, with the prototype brick façade factory fitted prior to erection, the developer completed the superstructure construction fully watertight in just five days – a significant improvement on traditional masonry construction which can take some eight to 10 weeks.

The interior of the model home is being used to showcase the different stages of build in each room. The living room is completed but moving through the house the water and electricity fittings are exposed, as is the thermally efficient wall and roof insulation. Panels provide links to product information, building regulations and Persimmon’s own guidelines.

David Griffin, Group Build Director at Persimmon Homes, says: ‘We’re really proud to launch our model home to contractors and suppliers and are confident that this will enable Persimmon to be at the forefront of construction innovation. With the Government hoping to build 1.5m homes over the next five years as well as Future Homes Standards being implemented in 2025, our mission to place efficiency and sustainability at the heart of our business is of ever-increasing importance. We look forward to seeing our trial home put to good use over the coming year, helping us to achieve our goal of developing sustainable, quality homes for local people.’
