Digital parking and visitor permits in Barnsley

From January, residents will be able to buy, renew and update permits and vouchers online, with no need to display a physical permit in their vehicle.

Parking in the zones reserved for residents of the South Yorkshire market town of Barnsley is about to get a lot easier through a new, online system of permits. Rollout of the new scheme begins next month.

Under the new system, which is managed through the MI Permits app, residents can buy, renew and update parking permits and vouchers at their convenience – 24/7. The permits and vouchers can be used straight away, without the need for a physical document being displayed in the vehicle. That means it cuts down on paperwork, bureaucracy and hassle.

All existing permits and vouchers will remain active and valid until they need to be renewed. On renewal, existing permits will be made digital.

Pre-purchased, paper vouchers to permit visitors to use the reserved parking zones can still be used until the resident runs out of them. Sales of paper vouchers will end on March 31, 2025. The online system of vouchers will follow the existing process, limited residents to 25 vouchers per month.

The new permit system only affects existing residents’ parking zones. Affected residents will receive a leaflet setting out the changes and new process. They do not need to do anything until they receive a renewal email, which is sent 28 days in advance of the expiry of their current permit. In cases where the council does not have an email for a given resident, a letter will be posted to their home address.

The council has been hosting drop-in sessions where residents can ask questions about the new system and seek advice, with support provided for those who are not online or do not have access to the internet.

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, says: ‘Digital parking and visitor permits for our existing parking zones will provide a better, simpler and more flexible offer for residents who currently use them. Both parking and visitor permits will be available to use immediately once renewed or purchased without the potential to lose paper copies and residents only need to act upon their existing permit expiring. For those who aren’t online, drop-in sessions and ongoing support will be available to assist with the move to digital permits so everyone can access the benefits that this change will bring.’
