A new survey has found big differences between C-suite and executive perception of data management and the reality for those on the ground.
The study conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of Capital One found 70% of IT staff are spending up to four hours per day fixing data issues, undertaking quality checks, and correcting mistakes.
In comparison, 77% of business leaders feel it is easy to access and use the data they need to perform at work, and 87% felt their organisation had a modern data ecosystem to build and roll out AI.
By contrast, just 13% of technical experts were confident in their ability to identify and data issues in less than one hour. More than one-in-five considered leadership support, skills development, and education in these areas to be inconsistent and the organisation lacked a strong data culture.
Broad views of data security were also identified, with 76% of business leaders saying this was their top concern with AI, followed by data quality and management (73% and 65% respectively), but 38% said data management was only given moderate importance. When asked about approaches to mitigating and reducing security risks, with 58% using data encryption and 20% tokenisation.
The research backs up other recent studies which have shown businesses and organisations in general are not ready for AI and machine learning due to cost and talent shortages. Cisco’s AI Readiness Index found only 13% of large operations are ‘ready to leverage AI and AI-powered technologies’. And data bricks surveyed 1,100 executes and technical staffers, and found that 85% of companies user generative AI in some function, but only 22% believe their IT infrastructure can support expansion in this area.
