Two major intersections in the Scottish city will have smart sensors installed, improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
Glasgow City Council has commissioned VivaCity to boost traffic flow at the junctions of Church Road and White Street, and Dumbarton Road, enabling infrastructure to detect vehicles more accurately and respond effectively.
Glasgow City Region’s City Deal is funding the project, which forms part of a wider £1billion investment in local transport improvements across the metropolitan area and its surrounds.
The same technology is being used at the crossing of Paisley Road West, which will improve bus journey times and reduce waiting times for pedestrians who need to cross the road. People using the pavement will be counted anonymously by the AI system, ensuring priority is given when large groups waiting at the crossing. Buses will also be detected on approach, and given right of way to speed up boarding times.
‘Our AI technology is designed to make cities safer and more efficient for everyone,’ said Mark Nicholson, CEO of VivaCity. ‘By improving traffic signal responsiveness and providing valuable insights into road usage, we are confident that this partnership will help to improve travel in Glasgow and make it safer. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this collaboration will bring to the city.’
Additionally, the new sensors will collect data on other travel modes, including cycling and private cars, which will be used to map out multimodal transport use through the junctions. Reports generated from this will be used to better inform road layout changes in the future.
